I practice the art of noticing; giving deliberate attention to the enchantment of the world we live in. I use painting as a method of recording and honouring brief extraordinary moments, aiming to capture and immortalise them. Consequently, the time and labour spent capturing a temporary event pays homage to the bewitching beauty of it. The events depicted are not grand or imposing in their nature, but quiet and familiar. These paintings of shop aisles, funfairs, kitchen counters, and shadows on the floor, are all underpinned by a fascination with light. Light is everchanging and everlasting, concealing and revealing, natural and man-made. It anchors my work, with the light teaching my eyes to consciously observe the magic of life.
I work with oil and acrylic, but in my preparatory stages, I use a range of available materials to sketch in the moment. My paintings are often small in scale. Sometimes this is reflective of the size of the objects in real life. More importantly, this is to allow viewer engagement with my work to be more intimate and personal. I want viewers of my work to be absorbed into it, and to experience the feelings of numinosity and mesmerism that guide me to create. Altogether, my body of work creates a tapestry of human life, built from magical moments otherwise forgotten. My work is an invitation to take some time to appreciate the poetry of the world around us.
